Former Democratic Presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg has endorsed Daniel Smith in his November battle against Daryl Metcalfe for Metcalfe’s Pennsylvania House seat.
“As mayor, I’ve seen up close how local issues don’t always have to be partisan,” said Buttigieg, the 38-year-old first openly gay major candidate for president. “Daniel is somebody who will represent people, not based on party lines, income levels, personal agendas, or campaign donations.”
This is Smith’s second run against Metcalfe, a Republican known far and wide for his homophobic, xenophobic, misogynistic and racist comments. A fact that Buttigieg doesn’t fail to mention in his endorsement video.
“Daniel’s opponent in this race is one of the most bigoted, anti-LGTBQIA+ legislators in the country,” said Buttigieg. “Another term for that incumbent is a direct threat to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania’s inclusiveness to all of the groups that he attacks and seeks to discriminate against on a regular basis.”
According to a press release Smith said: “I’m honored to receive the endorsement of Mayor Pete,” said Smith. “He’s a trailblazer for the LGBTQ+ community and is a clear example of how to not let petty politics divide us as a nation, as we fight locally for better communities.” Smith is running against 22-year incumbent Rep. Daryl Metcalfe, who has received national attention for his crude and small-minded comments about gay people and anti-science views. He has viciously attacked his own constituents on the basis of their gender, sexual orientation, and beliefs.
Also from the release:
Metcalfe has previously accused fellow State Representatives that he disagrees with as “lying homosexuals” and “touchy-feely.” He has misrepresented scientific facts about climate change and public health numerous times and routinely demonstrates a lack of basic scientific knowledge. Metcalfe called a group of veterans fighting to raise the public’s awareness of climate change “traitors” and opposed recognizing Domestic Violence Awareness month because it would “advance the homosexual agenda.” Previously, Metcalfe called the survivors of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting in Parkland, FL, which killed 17 students, “crisis actors.”
“Daryl’s behavior is a prime example of a career politician with extremist views that neither represents the true makeup of the 12th district nor the inclusivity of everyday Pennsylvanians,” said Smith. “When elected, I will change that by being a public servant for all, rather than a politician that caters to only a few.” Buttigieg, a former marine and proud veteran, agrees with Smith that America is not a place of hate, violence, racism, and intolerance. That’s why Daniel Smith is proud to have Mayor Pete’s endorsement and to fight together to build better communities.
