Hump! Film Festival moved to Ace Hotel after original space pulls out

This year’s Hump! Film Festival  is moving to the Ace Hotel for its May 8-10 Pittsburgh run.

This is the 14th year for the festival started by sex-advice columnist, Dan Savage. The 90-minute collection of carefully curated films are made not by porn stars, but everyday folks. The films, while explicit, provide diverse views of sex and sexuality.

The festival was originally supposed to take place at the Regent Square Theater, but fesitval spokesperson Caroline Dodge said theater’s new management pulled the plug. It’s not a new occurrence, Dodge says and does happen from time to time. it actually happened once before in Pittsburgh. In 2014, city officials in Dormont complained about the content of Hump!, leading the Hollywood Theater to cancel the performance. It was later rescheduled at the Row House in Lawrenceville.

“One guy thought it was a great idea and the new guy thought otherwise and no one told us about the change and now we’re kinda caught with our pants down (pun intended),” Dodge wrote in an email to the Current before the new location was found. “We have a hard time finding spots to play HUMP in general, and Pittsburgh is no exception. Sometimes it’s literally laws about playing porn, sometimes it’s the neighborhood and fears of what the community will think, and sometimes it’s just folks who don’t want what we’re peddling.”
Originally the plan was to find a location for the fall, but a day later, the Ace agreed to show the film. More information on the festival can be found in Tuesday’s issue of the Pittsburgh Current or by going here.
