Pittsburgh Current in the running for 7 Press Club of Western Pennsylvania Golden Quill Awards

The Pittsburgh Current is a finalist for seven Golden Quill Awards from the Press Club of Western Pennsylvania. Winners will be announced at the press club annual banquet on May 29.

“I’m so proud of what this staff has been able to accomplish after less than a year in business,” said Pittsburgh Current Associate Publisher Bethany Ruhe. “We are a mission-oriented media company committed to providing this region with thoughtful, independent content. We are humbled by these nominations and we plan to continue providing the kind of influence-free journalism this region deserves.”

The finalists are:

Breaking News: Haley Frederick, Jake Mysliwczyk and Amanda Reed for coverage of the Tree of Life tragedy.

Public Affairs/Politics/Government Reporting: Rebecca Addison for coverage of Leon Ford’s brief campaign for Pittsburgh City Council.

Medical/Health Reporting: Rebecca Addison for coverage of anti-abortion Crisis Pregnancy Centers.

Arts and Entertainment Reporting: Margaret Welsh for her feature on Pittsburgh band, Chantillion.

Columns/Blogs: Haley Frederick for her twice-monthly column, This Tastes Funny.

Sports Reporting: Charlie Deitch for nationally breaking the story of a male Steelers Fan who choked a pregnant Chargers fan at Heinz Field.

Profile: Charlie Deitch for a profile on hip-hop artist Choo Jackson.
