Even though Theron Brown has yet to release his debut as a leader, the pianist has cultivated some major recognition. A graduate of the University of Akron, he logged time with several jazz and classical orchestras before being cast as a young Herbie Hancock in Miles Ahead, Don Cheadle’s 2016 film about the life of Miles Davis. Still a resident of Akron, he serves as a professor of Jazz Piano at Kent State University. The Up Close & Personal Summer Jazz Series is hosting Brown’s trio this Friday with local vocalist Carolyn Perteete at the Metropolitan Club, one of Downtown’s newer performance spaces.

THERON BROWN. 7 p.m. Friday, June 7. 25 Market Square, Downtown. $12. www.perlepgh.com
